I rarely work with lure companies, because pro staffing them obligates me to use those lures, and there are times that other lures do a better job.
And a guide's gotta use what works. Simple.
Two companies, however, have been putting out product that I keep using for lakers. One is Big-Nasty Tackle Co., which produces a bucktail jig that is awesome. And, pictured here, is a new series of vibration lures by Vibrations Tackle. Called the Echotail, they've been in my tackle box since summer, and I can say they call in lakers really well. I've been working to tweak them throughout the last months, with excellent success. A productive combination of extreme (but adjustable) vibration and seductive plastic wiggle.
You'll see I axed the front treble, because it doesn't help, and is easy to get caught on the bottom of the hole. I'll also be drilling a small hole in the rear top of the bait, so I can put the rear treble on top and anchor one hook in the plastic. This is the best way to present for lakers.
Now, a lot of anglers see these types of testimonials and are turned off, because they think someone has been "bought and paid for" in the fishing industry. I look at it exactly the other way around. I don't write these types of recommendations for just any company, because it's my guiding reputation at stake when I do. Also at stake is my 15 years of newspaper journalism experience (truth telling). I don't need to pro staff products. I can just go buy them, after all. And I enjoy working with companies to develop effective fishing tools. Why waste 50 years of fishing experience?
So when you see something like this from me, you can know I believe what I'm saying.
Have fun out there, guys and gals. That's what fishing is all about!
And if you're determined not to let a warm February stop your ice fishing season, come to Ely, where the ice is thick, the travel fine, and the lakers snapping!
